Christmas 2020 Ideas! Making a “Box of Chocolates.” Yes Literally a Box Constructed Out of Candy Bars
This is a good idea if you want to give someone a creatively packaged gift, or a treat box, especially if they love this type of chocolate bar. Although it is probably important to use mostly fair trade chocolate, the person I first made the box for was really into Hershey’s chocolate bars and was otherwise picky. So I have used 1.55oz sized Hershey’s bars in these boxes. They are very easy to work with and easier to buy in bulk, but there could be many other bars you could do this with!
For this box, I used 13 1.55oz bars of chocolate and one Giant sized Hershey’s bar on the bottom, which sticks out and makes it easier to carry and makes for a more stable bottom. I think the XL bar size could also work.
Step 1:
Place two candy bars at a 90 degree angle, for best results, make sure the Hersehy’s label is on the outside of the angle and right side up- and tape the two together by the ends, it is ok for the ends to stick outward. Then, take a third bar and attach it to one of the other bars at the same 90 degree angle, then attach a forth bar, that will be 90 degrees from both sides, completing the first box.
Step 2:
Now, place the giant bar in the middle, below that box you just created and secure it in the middle with tape (I used packing tape and a little scotch tape in this project) where you want to be able to lift the box like a tray. Then place two 1.55oz sized bars inside to cover the gaps on either side to create the bottom of the box and secure them to the Giant bar.
Next we are building the second row of the box, so secure one bar to another in the original square. Then, place another bar at a 90 degree angle against the first bar, with the label outwards, and then tape it by the ends and to the ends of the bottom bars. Then repeat securing two more bars creating the rest of the box.
Step 4:
Now take 3 bars and lay them all flat, one under the other, creating a row of 3, labels facing upwards, and tape these together on the tops and bottoms. Now this may be more fragile and you could make the lid of the box more secure by adding wooden supports or cardboard on the underside of the bars. I have not attached additional support and my lids are working well! I think it depends upon how stable you need them to be.
Step 5:
Place the lid on top of the box and secure the end of the lid on the opposite side from where you want the box to open. Now have fun opening and closing it a few times, marveling at your good craftsmanship. (Well, I won’t force you. But hopefully you are liking what you have built.)
Step 6:
Add a ribbon to the inside of the box and lid to tether the lid to the box so that it can be held open and doesn’t swing back so far. I simply taped a ribbon on the inside wall to the right side of the box, and to the rightmost side of the inside of the lid so the box will be held open just slightly angled to the outer edge of the box, so that my family members who are getting these boxes will be able to leave the box opened when they are picking which snack they want at that moment. (This year, they are being used as treat boxes!)
I hope you get some creative gift inspiration from this idea!

The Giant Bars (They also sell them at some grocery stores, the XL bars also would work.)
Vegan & Nut free bars in case you need another option. They're a little pricey, but I love this brand.
Vegan White Chocolate bars, they taste kind of like frosting to me? My sweet tooth is into it.
